Winter Magic in Clovelly: A Late Afternoon Stroll Through Time

Nestled on the dramatic North Devon coast, Clovelly is a village like no other. Its cobbled streets, car-free charm, and timeless beauty make it a year-round destination, but there’s something especially enchanting about a winter visit. On a crisp afternoon, we ventured to this historic gem, arriving just as the sun began to dip toward the horizon. What followed was an experience of peace, beauty, and nostalgia that will stay with us for years to come.

A Slow Meander Through History

As the visitor centre was about to close we only paid for parking – just £5.00. We began our visit at the top of the village, where the Clovelly Soap Company tempted us with its handmade treasures. The delicious scents of lavender and citrus wafted through the air as we browsed their beautifully crafted soaps, candles, and bath salts. After buying a candle & bath salts for our daughter’s birthday, we made our way down to the famous cobbled street, carefully stepping on smooth stones polished by centuries of footsteps.

The village was almost ours alone—just a handful of fellow visitors passed us by. Quaint cottages stood silent but welcoming, their windows glowing with warm light as wood smoke curled from chimneys. Autumn's golden hues still clung to the trees, and the sea breeze carried a hint of salt and pine.

The Harbour at Golden Hour

As we descended, the view opened up to reveal the stunning expanse of Bideford Bay. The late afternoon light cast a golden glow over the water, and we paused often to take in the scene. By the time we reached the harbour, the sun was beginning its slow descent, painting the sky in hues of amber and rose.

We wandered along the shoreline, watching as a lone fishing boat chugged toward the quay. The gentle lapping of the waves and the cries of seabirds created a soothing soundtrack to this peaceful moment. Looking up at the ancient harbour walls, you could almost feel the history surrounding you—the stories of generations who made their livelihoods here, tied to the rhythms of the tides.

A Sundowner to Remember

No visit to Clovelly would be complete without a stop at the Red Lion Hotel. We settled into a cosy spot overlooking the harbour, ordering a sundowner to toast the moment. As we sipped our drinks, the day gave way to evening, and the moon—a perfect, glowing orb—rose above the horizon. Its light reflected on the water, illuminating the scene with a soft, silvery glow.

The first stars began to twinkle, and the village above was a silhouette against the night sky. With the comforting hum of conversation in the background and the faint scent of wood smoke still lingering in the air, it was one of those rare moments of pure contentment.
